Communication in crisis situations is crucial. This was recently demonstrated in a viral videoin which a civilian calls the civilian emergency number after a fighter jet pilot unexpectedly crashed in his garden and both of them talked past each other through an ambiguous exchange. Reactions to this were mixed – some found it humorous, others incompetent. But what can we learn from this unusual situation?
WHAT HAPPENED?
A pilot was shot out of his jet at 2,000 feet (600 meters). He landed in a garden and knocked on the door of the house. The residents, completely overwhelmed by the situation, called the emergency number. The conversation that followed was confusing, to say the least. The dispatcher had difficulty understanding what was happening and the pilot didn't seem to realize that she didn't know what was happening.
